ADAN

Lives at Catherine’s Since: November 2012 Adan

About:

Hi, my name is Adan and I am 6 years old! I was born with my spinal cord outside of my body, which is called spina bifida. It caused me to be paralyzed from the knees down, to have hydrocephalus, and some learning disabilities. A shunt was placed in my head when I was a baby, so that the extra spinal fluid drains properly. I am very high-functioning and I walk on my knees; when my tendons are released and I will hopefully be able to walk normally! I love to meet new people and get to know them! Since I’ve been living here at Catherine’s I’ve learned to become very physically independent. Even though I might ask you to pick me up, please don’t, so that I can practice more.  I don’t want you to hurt your back lifting me.

Prayer Requests:

  • For successful completion of my leg surgeries, so I can walk
  • Completion of the process for me to attend the spina bifida clinic at Shriners Hospital in Los Angeles

Family Background:

I am from a small town called Maneadero, near Ensenada. My mother works nights and is very poor, and we have no indoor plumbing in our home. I have 2 older siblings and a younger sister. Out of love, my mother placed me with Sue, who has helped care for my needs since I was 3 months old.  She knew that she could no longer take care of my physical and medical needs. She visits me as often as she can and is present for all of my medical procedures.

ALEX

Lives at Catherine’s Since: June 2013 DSC02645

About:

Hi, my name is Alex and I am 1 year old. Also like my brother I was born prematurely because my mom used crystal meth when she was pregnant with me. My nose is a bit deformed and was most likely very open like my brother’s nose, until I got a nasty infection and the scar tissue closed my nose almost completely.  It has made it really hard for me to breath, but I recently had surgery to open up my nose, which will make breathing better! I love to suck my thumbs and  play with my feet!  I love to just be held and be loved on. I like to babble and try to talk. Please help me to get stronger by allowing me to practice sitting up, but I cannot do it alone yet and I still need you’re your help! Placing me on my stomach allows me to practice rolling over by myself. Please place a rattle or toy in my hand so that I can practice holding stuff and please give me plenty of eye contact! Since being at Catherine’s I am gaining weight, starting to smile, and doing more things that are appropriate for my age.

Prayer Requests:

  • Healing of my recently detected heart murmur.
  • For me to overcome all of the damage that was done to me by my lack of care as a newborn.

Family Background:

Similar to my brother Jose, I was taken away from my parents home when I was 7 months old. Due to severe malnutrition I was taken immediately to the hospital for 2 months where I was given 2 blood transfusions to save my life! I recently came to live at Catherine’s with my older brother and my new family!

NOEMI

Lives at Catherine’s Since: November 2012 DSC01666

About:

Hi, my name is Noemi and I am 7 years old! I was born with cerebral palsy and epilepsy. Before I came to Catherine’s Home I was living at the state run orphanage and I was being fed with a small eye dropper; which was very uncomfortable for me since I am unable to swallow normally because everything goes into my lungs. When I came here I received my feeding tube in my tummy and now I can eat! I am gaining weight and getting stronger! I still have those pesky seizures every day, so if I have one when you are with me, please don’t panic, just hold me and let the staff know. I love listening to music and one on one hugs, I like to be held and to sit up like the other kids… I just need a little extra help maintaining my balance! Even though I don’t speak and I don’t have full control of my body I still like have fun and be with the other kids!

Prayer Requests:

  • Complete healing of my epileptic seizures
  • For continued increase of my weight and strength

Family Background:

I don’t know much about my family, just that I was abandoned when I was a baby, but God has blessed me and placed me here at Catherine’s with a loving family.

GENESIS

Lives at Catherine’s Since: December 2012 DSC01460

About:

Hi, my name is Genesis and I am 7 years old! I came from a different orphanage in Tijuana which was closed and I was separated from my 6 brothers and sisters. When I came to Catherine’s I was in a lot of pain because my colon was not working. They think it was because I lacked proper medical care for my chronic constipation as a baby, which caused my colon to stretch. Since being here, I eat special food and my colon problem is now under control and it is working properly again! I now crawl where I want and can pull to stand! I am having surgery soon to straighten out my clubbed feet, so that hopefully I can walk one day! I love to smile and laugh and play with toys, but watch out because I have a good throwing arm! Please don’t get mad if I pull your hair, it probably just means I’m hungry and you can ask the staff to feed me! I love to hear music, especially the guitar so if you have one, please feel free to play me some music!

Prayer Requests:

  •  Healing of my colon and my digestive system
  • For continued improvement of my ability to communicate and decrease my frustration

Family Background:

I have a lot of brothers and sisters, but I am the only one with such severe special needs. My mother chooses to do drugs and lives in the streets of Tijuana.

MANUEL

Lives at Catherine’s Since: March 2013 DSC01607

About:

Hi, my name is Manuel, you can call me Manny and I am 3 ½ years old! I have autism, so I do not process information from  my senses (touch, sound, sight, taste & smell) the way that most people do and my senses are all increased, so I get really excited with colors, sounds & noises! I love sing a long videos, light up toys, balloons, parachutes, and most of all hats! If you are wearing one, I might borrow it for awhile. I don’t speak, so sometimes I get frustrated and bang my head, don’t let me do that though, you can ask the staff to help. I don’t like too much noise, so sometimes I need to go in my crib and be alone for awhile. Since being here at Catherine’s I have been learning to communicate better and I am getting the medical care that I need.

Prayer Requests:

  • Ability to communicate with others
  • Improve my diet by eating  wider variety of food
  • Friendly interaction with the other kids

Family Background:

I was abandoned by my family when I was born and was brought to the state run orphanage and at 7 months old I was placed in another orphanage. When they could no longer care of my needs, I was placed here at Catherine’s Home. There are currently no other facilities that accept children with autism under the age of 12 in the Baja.

BRIANA

Lives at Catherine’s Since: April 2013 DSC02308_ds

About:

Hi, my name is Briana and I am 4 years old! I was born with cerebral palsy and epilepsy. I have problems with my balance and my right foot drops, so sometimes I trip over it.  Since being at Catherine’s I have been getting therapy to strengthen my legs and help me to not walk so much on my toes. I get to go on the trampoline a lot because it helps me practice my balance. I love to play with my brother, Jose, jump on the trampoline, swing on the swing set, and just run around outside. I also love to give hugs and kisses! I enjoy singing along to worship songs and practicing my facial expressions.

Prayer Requests:

  • Healing of my skin conditions
  • My balance to continue improving and for healing of my epilepsy, so that I don’t need medicine anymore

Family Background:

I don’t remember very much about my family, but I was placed in another orphanage at a very young age with severe malnutrition and dehydration. I was delayed with my sitting, standing, walking, and speaking.

JOSE

Lives at Catherine’s Since: December 2012 066_ds

About:

Hi, my name is Jose and I am 3 years old! I was born prematurely because my mom used crystal meth when she was pregnant with me. My nose is a bit deformed and open, which makes it easy for me to get nasty infections. But I recently had surgery to fill it in more, so hopefully that will fix the problem! Before coming to Catherine’s I had a habit of banging my head  hard on the ground for attention, and I had a severe nasal infection, so I was brought here to receive more loving attention and medical care. I tend to have a lot of energy and get mad easily! My favorite things are cars and keys. I love to sit in the driver’s seat of the car and pretend that I’m driving!  I love learning new words in Spanish and in English! Watch out for me because I like to lock doors, especially bathroom doors. I like to play, run (but never walk) around, and be held!

Prayer Requests:

  • For me to continue developing my language and better management of my temper tantrums
  • Wisdom  for my doctors to continue healing my nasal defect

Family Background:

I was abandoned or taken away from my mother when I was a baby, and sent to a different orphanage, until I came to Catherine’s Home. I recently found out that I have a baby brother, 1 year old, with a similar nose issue and he is now living here with me at Catherine’s! I probably have other brothers and sisters who have also been abandoned due to my mother’s drug abuse.

CAMILA

Lives at Catherine’s Since: May 2013

DSC02717About:

Hi, my name is Camila and I am 2 years old! I came from the state run orphanage to Catherine’s so that I could get the special care that I need. I was born normal with no special needs, but when I was 7 months old I got sick with tuberculosis. This led to meningitis and the doctors had to put a shunt in my head for hydrocephalus. My illness has left me with weakness on the right side of my body. It’s frustrating for me when I see the other kids do stuff that is so hard for me.  Since coming to Catherine’s I am learning to practice moving more and try to strengthen my weak side. I need for you to encourage me to do more with my right hand, even though I might not like to.  I am getting more comfortable here and learning more and more language, English and Spanish, from the staff! I love to be held and to have fun with the other kids.

Prayer Requests:

  • To be able to use my right hand
  • My walking to improve and more control over my right knee
  • My shunt in my head to continue functioning properly

Family Background:

I was abandoned at the hospital by my family, when I got sick, but I am glad that God has placed me here with my new family at Catherine’s.

About:

SamuelHi, my name is Samuel and I am 9 years old! I am a smart cookie! I love living at Catherine’s. When I arrived from the State orphanage in January 2014 I just could not believe my new home. Dinner that night was amazing… and the food here has been awesome every day. It’s like I want to say:  “Yeah! gimme some more Teo!” Mama Sue thinks I have muscular dystrophy. I guess I will be needing medical check ups. They take good care of me here at Catherine’s.

I have new friends at Catherine’s! I am getting to know Adan and I hope we become best buddies. I am now going to school for the first time! Catherine’s bought me my school clothes and a nice back-pack were I keep my school supplies. Ariceli, who is one of the many mom’s here takes me school daily. Sometimes, mama Sebastiana picks me up. I am happy here. They have a lot of toys a playground and we have our own little school. I go to class at Catherine’s in the afternoons. My teachers Silvia, Liz and Anna are very nice to me. ANA KAREN

Lives at Catherine’s Since: December 2013

About:

anakarenHi, my name is Ana Karen and I am 7 years old! I kinda have a sad story but I know the Lord loves me dearly and that’s all that matters. I was living with my grandma in a place called “Ladrillera” near Popotla, south of Rosarito. I was born normal but at three months I fell to ground and hit my head hard against the floor. Since then I have never recovered and I live with severe cerebral palsy. My Mom and Dad separated and my grandma has been taking care of me for years. Grandma and I lived in a little house against a steep hill. Many of you would call it a shack, my room was dark and had no windows and now lamps.  We had no running water and just one light bulb in the front of the house. Grandma was looking for work and help from DIF to take care of me. She would never leave me, she always carried wherever she went. She would carry me across her shoulders. It was hard on grandma. One day I began to get really sick. The ground floor I was sleeping on (in spite of the blankets) was very humid and cold. I got pneumonia and had a high fever. I only weighed 25 lbs! That is not much for a 7 year old girl. Grandma began to get very worried and asked for help. The state DIF came one late afternoon with Sue and Teo to pick me up. Sue got on her knees and literally pulled me out of the ground. They drove me to this place, Catherine’s… and here I got my first bath! Sue tells me that my eyes opened as soon as I was placed in the warm water in this big tub they have here. I remember my face showed a glimpse of hope and shined as the sun for a second or two, when I was bathed. I was so sick, with a high fever and was very frail. Everyone at the orphanage was worried. People didn’t think I was going to make it through! But guess what… I did! The love and care that was given to me was equal to the love given to me by my grandma, except here they had the means to treat my pneumonia and malnutrition. Doctor’s say that I will be okay. I get physical therapy from Patty three times a week and I feel that my spine is less stiff and less curved from the bed I used to sleep on.  I will begin to go to school and Sue says that I will learn to speak with my eyes. On the day the school started here last April 2014, we had a little party and all the Moms took the kids to class. I was being held by Sebastiana, who loves me, and there was a lot of joy here that day… so much so that I began to smile with everyone else. Sebastiana cried as she held me… that was the first time I smiled.

Prayer Requests:

  • That I go to school like everyone else.
  • That I can stay here for as long as needed.
  • That my grandma continues to come visit every Sunday.

Family Background:

Something bad happened to me when I was three months old. I don’t know what it was, but it changed my life forever. My mom could not take care of me and I was cared for by my grandma who I will always love with all my heart. Thank you grandma for bringing me to Catherine’s.
