On January 12, 2005, Philanthropist Edward “Jerry” Mc Taggart founded Catherine’s Kids. Jerry’s heart was set for a long time, to start an orphanage for the most needy of God’s children. Catherine’s was to reach out to abandoned special needs and medically fragile children and provide for all their needs. Today Catherine’s is a home where the children’s emotional, spiritual and physical needs are attended to by a loving staff, allowing the children to reach their full potential and be blessed with a joyful life.
Jerry was born in Warren, OH. April 6, 1941. At the age of 2, the family moved to New Castle, PA where he grew up for most of his early life. His mother Catherine raised Jerry and his brother as a single Mom since age 2. She had severe health issues and could not take care of her children, so when Jerry was 8 years old his mother put him and his brother in an orphanage. She loved both and visited them consistently every other Sunday. Jerry was always longing to see her and it was very hard for him to wait for the visiting days and harder to see her leave.
When Jerry was 13 years old his mother remarried and the brothers moved out of the orphanage to live with their mom and the stepfather. At the age of 17 Jerry joined the Marine Corps and served at Camp Lejeune for 4 years. He was noticed by the Commander and was offered an appointment to attend the Annapolis Naval Academy, but Jerry had other plans. He went on to work in the corporate world and joined a credit counseling company in Detroit as a financial consultant. After five years of learning the trade and at the age of 26 he started his own financial counseling business. By 1971 he had founded Credit Counselors of America Inc. and later founded the very successful national Christian Credit Counselors a non-for profit ministry.
In the early 70’s and in recognition of his financial success and wisdom, Jerry was elected president of the American Association of Credit Counselors.
Jerry met his friend Larry Burkett in Florida in the early 80’s. Larry was a godly man and founder of CFC Christian Financial concepts and was influential in Jerry’s decision to the forming and funding of Christian Credit Counselors. Since then, Jerry has never looked back and has lived a life to serve the Lord.
Jerry moved to San Diego, California in the 90’s and became an active philanthropist donating to many charity organizations. In memory of his mother and his own experience as an orphan, he became involved by sponsoring orphaned children in Baja, Mexico.
Today Catherine’s Kids (named after his late mother) is serving the local and international community without discrimination on the basis of age, political affiliation, race, national origin, ethnicity, gender, disability type or religious belief. Catherine’s mission is dedicated to transform the lives of abandoned special needs and medically fragile children.
Jerry’s and his wife Monica are the main patrons of Catherine’s Kids. Their vision is to change the way the world cares for abandoned special needs and medically fragile children worldwide. Monica was raised in Baja California and knows first hand the needs of the special children.
