Directors of the Special Needs Children's Care Center

Missionaries Sue and Steve Johnson

Susan Johnson was born and raised in New Jersey, graduated from the University of Delaware with a BS degree and obtained her Physical therapy license in 1983. She has worked for the past 28 years mainly in orthopedic outpatient settings and was the director of a physical therapy department for a large orthopedic medical group for 8 years.  Her faith in Christ is at the core of her calling. Since 2000, Susan has served as a part time missionary traveling around the world volunteering as a specialist to care for children with disabilities. These countries include Mexico, Romania, Uganda, and most recently, her last two trips to Haiti serving as part of the Samaritan’s Purse disaster relief team responding to the devastating earthquake of 2010.

While in Africa in 2005, God gave to her a ministry calling to continue caring for fragile children. She felt the Lord tell her that she would be the “mother of many”,     Confirming the call with these three verses:

Matthew 24:40Whatsoever you do for the least of my brothers, that you do unto me…”

James 1:27  “Pure and undefiled religion is to care for the widow and the orphan, and to separate yourself from the things  of the world.”

Isaiah 6:8  “Here I am, send me...."

Baja Mexico has had a special place in Sue’s heart because the needs are so great and it has been so close to her home in San Diego. While integrating herself into the many orphanages and care facilities in Mexico, Sue has been able to expedite the donations of valuable adaptive equipment from the U.S. to needy children in Mexico desperate for help to improve the quality of their lives. Serving as a part time missionary, she has been a key link in helping many children in Mexico to get needed surgeries and specialized therapy donated by non-profit medical organizations in the U.S.  Sue has also taken the initiative by working hand in hand with the local Mexican agencies to place nine special needs children into loving adoptive families.

She has had an active role as a missionary and member of the advisory board with Catherine’s Children’s Home since it began in 2005.  She and her husband Steve have been officially sent out by their home church Horizon North County as full-time missionaries.  They are both excited to now have a facility in Rosarito, Mexico to to bring hope to the hopeless and Glory to God.

Steven Johnson was born in Oceanside California and raised in nearby Vista. He grew up working side by side with his father in the plastering business. He partnered with his father in the family business, Vista Plastering, for many years and became skilled in the building profession.

In October of 2010, Steve married his wife Susan knowing well that she had been called to be a full-time missionary to  help handicapped children in Mexico. Steve embraced the calling of his new bride Sue for himself and he has joined her in this calling to serve the LORD. He has learned what is truly important in life.... to be in God’s perfect will. In July 2011, they both moved to Rosarito, Mexico to open Casa Hogar de Catherine. Steve will use his building skills to prepare and install the necessary adaptive modifications to the facility so that it will be functional to receive and care for the special needs children. Steve will also be responsible for the facilities ongoing  maintenance and the mechanical requirements for adjusting wheelchairs and adaptive equipment.

Steve has a true servant's heart and he is willing to do whatever is necessary to provide a haven for these children who are in desperate need of love and medical care. He is committed to improve the quality of their lives and he knows that he is doing it as unto the LORD. Steve is looking forward to all that God has planned in the future as both he and his wife Sue continue to be obedient to their calling and step out in faith to serve Him.
